The PzKpfw III Ausf. J entered production in March 1941 and was the most advanced variant available during Operation Barbarossa. This tank had thicker armour than earlier PzKpfw III variants and was equipped with a longer 5cm gun starting in December 1941, although production of tanks with a short gun continued until May 1942.
