Avro Anson 12 (REAF Royal Flight c.1946). An Avro Anson 91 donated by the British Government to King Faruq for his Royal Flight was, despite having been fitted with luxurious appointments, nevertheless an ex-RAF machine. The original RAF serial number, NK150, had been removed. The machine was now an overall silver dope and bare metal with a pointed black anti-dazzle panel in front of the cockpit. Normal REAF roundels had been applied but there were no stripes on the tail. Nor was there a small crown in the outer ring of the fuselage roundel; this feature having been abandoned even on Royal Flight machines. Instead, this REAF Royal Flight aeroplane had an Egyptian royal coat-of arms behind the fuselage roundels and the flag of the REAF’s Royal Flight on the tailfin. For reasons which remain unknown, no REAF serial number ever seems to have been applied, perhaps because King Faruq disliked the Anson, while loving his American Dakota. (Artwork by Peter Penev)
