Iraq had only 155 T-72s at the start of the war, all of them assigned to the 10th Armoured Brigade. Most were built in 1975. Although severely cramped, tending to overheat and equipped with a poor fire-control system, they proved much more reliable and capable of outclassing the Chieftain on the battlefield. While some of these early Iraqi T-72s were left in the olive-green colour applied before delivery, at least some received the standardised Iraqi Army camouflage pattern consisting of yellow sand and blue-green, shown here. Most also received turret-numbers (shown here is the example ‘12’), usually applied in white. (Artwork by Radek Panchartek)
