Lockheed F-5E Lightning T9+MK Luftwaffe, Zirkus Rosarius — 1944-1945. Built as P-38]-25-LO 44-23725 for the USAAF in mid-1944, this airframe was later modified as an unarmed photo-recce F-5E. It ended up in enemy hands when stolen from Pomigliano, Italy by USAAF 2nd Lt Martin James Monti on October 13, 1944. Defecting, he landed in German-controlled Milanhe, some 500 miles northeast. After being taken on by the Germans, it was finished in the scheme depicted here and passed to the Zirkus Rosarius, the unit tasked with testing captured aircraft. Later recaptured by US troops in Germany during May 1945, it’s believed to have been scrapped.
