A reconstruction of one of about 20 MiG-23MFs which Libya received in 1984–1986. The type was camouflaged in a standardized pattern consisting of beige (BS381C/388), dark brown (BS381C/411 or 450, similar to FS 20095) and olive green (BS381C/298, similar to FS 34098) on the upper surfaces, and light admiralty grey (BS381C/697, FS35622) on undersurfaces. Dielectric panels were usually painted in medium grey (FS26152), but – like earlier MiG-23MSs – a number of LAAF MiG-23MFs had their radomes painted in white. The aircraft arrived armed with R-23R and R-23T medium-range air-to-air missiles (shown installed underwing) and R-60MK, short-range missiles, but were modified for deployment of much more potent R-24R/T missiles too. When flying CAPs over northern Chad, they frequently used drop tanks: these could be installed under wings swept fully forward only, and had to be ejected before the aircraft could accelerate.
