| Mikojan-Gurevics MiG-17 |
On the dissolution of the UAR, the reestablished SyAAF inherited about 40 MiG-17Fs, most of which were mounts of No. 101 Squadron. The jets included a mix of aircraft originally delivered to Syria before 1958 (serials in the range 901–999) and those delivered to Egypt (serials in the range 2201–2399). All were left in silver grey overall, and through the 1960s wore national markings in the form of red-white-black roundels and fin flashes with three green stars (the latter often applied rather crudely). By 1965, many of the MiG-17Fs of what was now Air Brigade 3 also had insignia below the cockpit. In the case of this jet (serial number 966), the insignia was a roaring wolf: it remains unclear if this was the pilot’s personal insignia or a squadron crest. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
