In early 1994, the USAF Europe deployed elements of the 512th and 526th FS of the 86th TFW from Ramstein AB in West Germany to Aviano AB in northern Italy, where these were assigned to the 401st Operations Group (Provisional) as part of the NATO’s Operation Deny Flight. On 28 February 1994, four F-16Cs intercepted six Bosnian Serb J-21s shortly after these attacked targets in the Novi Travnik area, and shot down five of them (though the USAF officially credited its pilots with four kills). The lead in the first section to open fire was the F-16C 89-2137, piloted by Captain Robert G Wright. The jet is illustrated in the configuration as during that mission, wearing the standard camouflage pattern in grays FS36320 and 36118 on top surfaces, and light ghost gray (FS35375) on undersurfaces, and with the red band of 526th FS near the tip of the fin. The aircraft went on to take part in Operation Deliberate Force, in September 1995, by when it wore three kill markings and several bomb markings. In April 1994, through combining all the 48 F-16C/D Block 40s of the 86th TFW with elements of the 301st FW and the 401st FW, the USAF created the 31st FW. Correspondingly, the 512th and 526th FS were reorganised as the 510th and 555th FS. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
