The Kokusai Ki-86 was based on the Swedish-designed Bücker Bü.131 Jungmann and used primarily as a trainer aircraft, with a secondary capability to be armed as a light bomber. The ATAIU quickly learned to appreciate the Japanese capability to modify (and better) the European models and retained up to a dozen for training purposes. All were painted in dark green on top surfaces and sides and received the suitable insignia. Notably, the French did not follow in fashion and never operated the Ki-86.
