As of 1988–1990, Iraq had developed several types of experimental launchers for R-17E missiles and their indigenous derivatives, two of which entered service. The main artwork shows the TEL developed in 1989 by engineer Wallid Alawi and designated, accordingly, al-Wallid. Towed by a Scania truck, this was constructed on a commercial trailer and contained a locally manufactured, reverse-engineered version of the raising arm from the MAZ-543/9P117 TEL, and a cabin with control panels for the missile. Six such TELs were manufactured in total. The upper artwork shows the final version of the fixed launcher, a total of 56 of which were manufactured, and 28 of which were brought into position in western Iraq between air bases H-2 and H-3 in 1990.
