The vz. 53 towed, twin-barrel 30mm automatic anti-aircraft gun was introduced to service in the Czechoslovak People’s Army in 1953, even though full-scale production began only a few years later. Hundreds were acquired by Iraq, and they saw intensive deployment during the Iran-Iraq War of 1980–1988, both in their intended anti-aircraft role, and in ground combat. Dozens were mounted atop BTR-50PK armoured personnel carriers, converting them into self-propelled fire-support vehicles, highly valued at a time when the primary threat the Iraqi army faced was the infiltrating and roaming Iranian infantry.
