The Impala programme of the mid-1960s was extremely important for the development of the South African defence industry, which produced the small, Italian-designed jet trainer under licence. In SAAF service the MB-326 Impala Mk I was assigned to Nos. 4 and 5 Squadrons for advanced pilot training, and the single-seat Mk II light attack version followed the trainer into production. In 1969, the Pretoria regime expressed its willingness to lend some Impala Mk Is to the Portuguese Air Force for in-theatre pilot training at Luanda, but Lisbon declined. (Artwork by Luca Canossa)
