Overseas air defence requirements led Portugal to request a delivery of Hughes MIM-23 HAWK (Homing All-the-Way Killer) surface-to-air missiles from the US in 1973-74. The issue was raised repeatedly during negotiations over continued American use of the Lajes air base, but Washington consistently equivocated, citing logistical and political obstacles. Had Portugal acquired the HAWK, it would have been deployed to protect strategic points in Guinea and Angola. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
