In 1983, the FAS received nine MD.500Es. Assigned to the Escuadrón de Helicópteros, at Ilopango AB, they were meant to serve for scouting and liaison. Nevertheless, all were armed with (six-barrel) mini guns calibre 7.62mm (usually with a big ammunition box in the rear cabin) and frequently deployed as gunships for fire-support operations. This was the MD.500E construction number 0213E: it received the FAS serial 41. It survived the war, but crashed during a rescue mission on Suchitlan Lake, on 8 March 1993. (Artwork by Luca Canossa)
