On 8 August 1964, when Ankara decided to actually launch a military intervention on Cyprus and the THK was ordered into action, it took several hours to re-deploy numerous of its fighter-bombers to air bases closer to the island – of which at the time there were next to none in southern Turkey. This re-deployment was supported by Douglas C-47 Dakota transports drawn from all five units operating this type at the time (including 221, 222, 223, 224 and 225 Filos), which hauled ground personnel, ground equipment, spares and weapons to airfields closer to the combat zone. This example wearing the serial ETI_39 is depicted as photographed a few years later, by when the Turkish C-47 fleet was re-deployed from Etimesgut to Gaziemir AB. (Artwork by Luca Canossa)
