There were at least a dozen Universal Carriers bought by the Biafrans and converted into light tanks by local workshops. This model – locally dubbed the Red Devil – had no turret but had an open front with mountings for at least one light machinegun fitted. In reality these Red Devils were ‘death traps’ for their crews and most were quickly disabled by Nigerian artillery. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
