The 15 Breda BA.65A-80s that Iraq ordered from Italy in 1937 represented the first ground-attack of the RIrAF designed as such from the start. While serials 106 and 107 were equipped as trainers, the other 13 examples, including 118 shown here, belonged to the Ba.65A variant equipped with a hydraulically powered turret for the rear gunner. Other armament included one 7.62mm light machinegun and one 12.7mm heavy machinegun in each wing. Moreover, the type could carry up to 1,000kg (2,000lbs) of bombs. Inset is shown the insignia of No. 5 Squadron as in use during the late 1930s. The RIrAF’s Bredas saw much action during the Anglo-Iraqi War of 1941, and a few survivors continued serving until 1947.
