Based on a Canadian design, the 75/24 Pack or Mountain Howitzer was developed in a cooperation between the Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE) and Ordnance Factories to become the first indigenously designed and manufactured lightweight howitzer in Indian service. Its nomenclature is based on the calibre; 75mm, with a barrel length of 24 calibre. Although taking a long time to develop, and proving something of an ‘underdevelopment’, it became highly popular once it entered service, and at least one such battery was deployed during Operation Cactus.
