By the time the U-2s returned to the skies over the USSR in late 1959 much of the fleet had been upgraded to the J-75-powered U-2C standard. Moreover, many were painted in the semi-gloss version of the USN’s Sea Blue – originally designated AN607 non-specular sea blue, later FS25042 – and, later on, in its matt version (FS35042). This was valid for ‘Article 360’, the aircraft flown by Francis G Powers on 1 May 1960. The jet was configured for its fateful mission as shown here, including the SIGINT System 6 (identifiable by antennae on either side of the nose and the front portion of the Q-bay), B-camera installation with seven windows (in the Q-bay), Giant Stride slipper tanks, and the ventral fin including antennae for the SIGINT Systems 3 and 6. Finally, it carried no ‘canoe’ dorsal fairing during its final mission, and no tail number. (Artwork by Tom Cooper)
