The ASU-85 was an assault gun designed to replace the ASU-57. Based on the chassis of the PT-76 amphibious tank, it mounted a 85mm D-70 gun – with limited anti-tank capability – and a coaxially mounted 7.62mm machine gun. Each VDV division had one battalion of 18 such vehicles, which was usually held centrally and detached as required by the situation. All the ASU-85s deployed during Operation Danube were painted in dark olive green overall. However, all received the white identification stripe down their superstructure – in addition to their usual turret numbers. (Artwork by David Bocquelet)
